Be The Nail

We were chatting at work yesterday and Dizzy was remarking how I can often give the impression I'm more serious than I actually am in my flirtations/dalliances.

Crushed: People take that sort of thing too seriously.

Diplodocus: Take what too seriously?

Crushed: All this Love and relationships stuff. It's nice like, but it's not the be all and end all.

Diplodocus: Most people would say it was.

Crushed: Come on! Is that all you value your life as?

Diplodocus: So, what would you describe your main priority in life as?

Crushed: To be a nail.

Diplodocus: What?

Crushed: Just one more nail. One more nail in the coffin. That's all I really want, I think.

One more nail. Because every nail counts. Every life counts.

For want of a nail, a shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe, a horse was lost.
For want of a horse, a rider was lost.
For want of a rider, a battle was lost.
For want of a battle, the war was lost.

And it matters. Because the future really is at stake.

So I'm quite happy just being a nail.
Every nail counts.

OT but I'd like a seat like the one in the pic.

But a nail suggests some sort of bonding or connecting, doesn't it?

Pretty cool thought. Good thing you explained it; my first thought was of the nail in the song that goes 'I'd rather be a hammer than a nail'...

But isn't everyone a nail? Some are just bigger than others...

and I agree that every life counts, but there again, some more than others...

Yeah, right. I don't think so.

(clears throat; sings)

I'd rather be a hammer than a nail.
Yes, I would.
If I could.
I truly would.

Speaking of homo sapiens sapiens as a species, one thing it has in common with other spieces is to reproduce its DNA from one generation to the next, one soma at a time. I (confirmed bachelor) wouldn't say it's the only thing to do in life. I wouldn't say it's unimportant either. Whether or not it's overblown depends on where you're sitting, and what you're looking at.

Nunyaa- Yes, it was totally off topic :)
I quite like my couch. I find stray pound coins in it from time to time...

Princess P- :) Trust you to get all Freudian...
Well of course, bonding and connecting is what communicationj is all about. And in a species of compulsive communicators, I guess I'm as compulsive about communicating as it gets :)

Eve- We can't all change the world, but we can be PART of changinf it. I worked for a bank once which had use a compulsory screensaver. There it flashed across our screens 'YOU are the difference.' Cheesy, but true.
Think about it. Think of EVERY battle in history. Look at the winning side, then take a soldier from that side and transfer him to the other, and rerun it. There really will come a point when there IS a magic soldier who won the battle. HE was the difference.

So yes, everyone counts.

Fusion- You can't nail Dracula in his coffin with only one nail.

History is full of little people, scared people, ordinary people, who made a difference and no one remembers.

Think how important to world history every fishing boat that answered the call to help evacuate Dunkirk in 1940 was. Maybe just one of those boats was the difference. Maybe just three boats less, and the First man on the Moon, would have planted the Swastika.

jmb- :) I'm slightly intrigued- I'm guessing your response is to my last line, but I can't be sure.

But I think yes, it's a nice thought. A hopeful one :)

X-dell- Well, yes, it IS important. I mean certainly, I think in one sense having children is something I DO want, quite badly.
But on the other hand, I appreciate that you can't always have everything.

You never know. Julia might be out there, ready and waiting :)

Have to agree with this part.

I like what X-dell says...I'd rather be a hammer. But I'm bossy like that.

I would rather be a screw - for obvious reasons...

I think I'd prefer to be the glue.
